Distinguishing thixotropy from viscoelasticity

چکیده
Owing to nonlinear viscoelasticity, materials often show characteristic features that resemble those of thixotropy. This issue has been debated in the literature over past several decades, and experimental protocols have proposed distinguish thixotropy from viscoelasticity. In this work, we assess these by carrying out experiments using polymer solutions, thixotropic clay dispersions, modeling their behavior, respectively, FENE-P constitutive equation a viscoelastic aging model. We find criteria literature, such as step down jump shear rate startup at different waiting times elapsed since preshear, are inadequate marked contrast, application step-strain or step-stress after cessation preshear serves useful discriminant between materials, observe strain (or stress) eventually leads slowing relaxation dynamics function time. However, for modulus (creep compliance) curve shifts lower (higher values time until equilibrium is reached. While criterion offers robust distinction viscoelasticity systems studied here, further investigations based on other needed establish its versatility will lead greater insight into long-standing rheological categorization.

Thixotropy in yield stress fluids as a limit of viscoelasticity
[Received on ] Thixotropic yield stress fluids have a yield stress and viscosity which change slowly over time as the fluid undergoes structural changes. This article reviews recent work which shows how such behavior can arise as a limit of viscoelastic flow when a relaxation time becomes large. The large relaxation time introduces a small parameter which can be used as a basis for singular per...
متن کاملDistinguishing dynamic and static yield stress of fresh cement mortars through thixotropy
The dynamic and static yield stress of fresh cement mortar were measured in a rotational rheometer with a vane geometry using shear rate and shear stress-controlled protocols, respectively. Through a shear rate-controlled steady-state protocol, the equilibrium flow curve is measured and fitted with the Bingham model to obtain dynamic yield stress. A negative slope in the equilibrium flow curve,...
متن کاملDistinguishing Radiculopathies from Mononeuropathies
Identifying "where is the lesion" is particularly important in the approach to the patient with focal dysfunction where a peripheral localization is suspected. This article outlines a methodical approach to the neuromuscular patient in distinguishing focal neuropathies versus radiculopathies, both of which are common presentations to the neurology clinic. This approach begins with evaluation of...
متن کاملDistinguishing Opinion from News
Newspapers have separate sections for opinion articles and news articles. The goal of this project is to classify articles as opinion versus news and also to do analysis of the results to figure out the factors that distinguish the two. Preliminary results show that in this is possible with unigram features in an SVM with F1 of .90.
متن کاملDistinguishing Functional Constipation from Organic Causes in Children
The diagnosis of functional constipation (FC) is usually straightforward. Almost 95% of childhood constipation is functional in nature. The remaining 5% can be attributed to wide variety of conditions. Many of these etiologies are obvious by history and examination and many have other specific symptoms besides constipation. It is especially important to look for presence of any symptoms or si...
